The studies presented here provide support for current approaches used to assess the allergenic potential of transgenic proteins (which are highly conservative, but effective) and also provide new tools that could be quite useful for safety assessment. More sophisticated structure-activity tools may prevent the unnecessary elimination of potentially useful products early in the development process. More detailed protocols for serum testing have been developed that should be applied so that the data generated are reliable as there are many pitfalls that can lead to inaccurate prediction of allergenicity using this approach.
