RTI, under contract with FDA, constructed this database on cosmetic ingredients that could potentially be derived from animals. These ingredients are of interest because of the potential for transmission of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) or other Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs).

For each ingredient, the database includes information on the ingredient name and CAS number(s), animal species source or other source, type of tissue from which the ingredient is obtained, companies that supply the ingredient, countries in which suppliers are located, trade names of the ingredient, ingredient function, types of products that contain the ingredient, trade names of mixtures that contain the ingredient, companies that supply mixtures that contain the ingredient, and references.

The report provides an introduction to the database and describes the sources of data and how the database was constructed as well as the structure of the database.
