The Microbial Source Tracking Working Group at Rutgers, the State University has established this library of microbial source tracking (MST) related documents, which is hosted and maintained by the RCE Water Resources Program.  This library has been created to provide a common source for up-to-date information as it applies to MST. This Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presentation on microbial source tracking is featured here. 

GEOVET 2010 was a conference held from November 29 - December 5, 2010 for those with an interest in spatial disease patterns, risk factors and control method. The conference provided an international forum for researchers, policy-makers and agencies that use spatial epidemiological methods to present, review and discuss methods and applications. The scope of GEOVET 2010 included data management systems, surveillance, statistical and modelling approaches, the application of geographic information systems, and remote sensing applications in veterinary science, veterinary public health and zoonotic disease research and control activities. This presentation is part of the Stakeholder's Discussion Series from the Produce Safety Project, and is given by Karen Lowell and Jeff Langholz and called Safe and Sustainable: Co-Managing for Food Safety and Ecological Health in California’s Central Coast Region. The presentation was given on April 7, 2010 in Hyattsville, MD. The presentation discusses a study that represents the intersection of concerns about the safety of fresh produce and concerns about the environmental impacts of industry-led food safety practices. In the wake of the 2006 E. coli outbreak in spinach from California there was some concern on the environment and scorched earth policy—very aggressive management strategies on farm that were of concern and may be having an environmental impact. This report examines these concerns. 

This presentation describes an overview of the benefits of risk analysis from a food industry perspective. It explains that risk analysis provides a framework for considering scientific data adding value by incorporating stakeholder issues and increasing the acceptability of risk management decisions.

This presentation illustrates systematic steps and an iterative approach to select and conduct risk assessments addressing data quality and transparency concerns. This presentation compares the Listeria monocytogenes risk ranking risk assessments developed by the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition/Food and Drug Administration (CFSAN/FDA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization (FAO/WHO). Although this presentation illustrates substantial differences in the two risk assessments, it shows that they scientifically support each other while providing unique insights.

These presentations are the result of a joint symposium held by the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN), Society for Risk Analysis (SRA), Risk Assessment Consortium (RAC) in September 2003 to discuss peer review of risk assessments.

Data is given on the number of food poisoning outbreaks in China from 1990-1999 by cause, and on mortality rates from 1990-1996 from various foodborne bacteria. There is also a history of Bongkrekic acid (BA) food poisoning in Asia, data on BA food poisoning caused by various foods in China (outbreaks, cases, mortality), BA hazard identification, and risk management considerations. There is an exposure assessment of E. coli from fly feces, and the calculated efficacy of hypothetical risk mitigations strategies. There is hazard identification information for fumonisins, with specific risk assessment data on aflatoxins. Information is presented on sugarcane poisoning, including numbers of outbreaks, cases, and deaths, the implication of Arthrinium spp. as the pathogenic fungus, and risk management considerations. Data is also given on the regulated limits of mycotoxins in China, on ochratoxin A produced by Aspergillus, on mould contamination in various beverages including juices, and on mould contamination in liquid functional food.
